'And you, of the tender years can't know the fears that your elders grew by, And so please help them with your youth, they seek the truth before they can die. Teach your parents well, their children's hell will slowly go by, And feed them on your dreams, the one they fix,the one you'll know by. Don't you ever ask them why, if they told you, you would cry, So just look at them and sigh and know they love you.'
Crosby,Stills and Nash (1970)
Merriam-Webster, the internet dictionary, describes Magic as 'a power that allows people to do impossible things by saying special words or performing special actions. I'm often reminded that Magic surrounds us every minute of our lives. Humans have the remarkable capacity to endure and overcome. We do this through saying special words and performing special actions to rise above the negative aspects of our lives. From children learning to ride for the 1st time or athletes like Roger Bannister who broke the impossible 4 minute mile or Muhammad Ali who told us he was 'The Greatest' and became 'The Greatest'. Collectively humans have travelled to the moon, which even 50 years previous was considered impossible. Special words and special actions were used to achieve these incredible feats.
The song lyrics also remind me of the stories we tell each other on a daily basis. When we interact with children, what is it that we describe to them? what magic are they being shown on a daily basis? It's true that they can't know the fears that their elders grew by until their elders instill it in them. So what special words or actions are you showing to your children, family or community? Are you sharing inspiration and compassion or are you sharing your fears masquerading as reality?
Choose wisely because you create your own reality.
